Our lovely friend Viv has a big birthday coming up.... 30! We wanted to surprise her with something fun while we all went camping last weekend, and decided that a piñata would be the perfect way kick-off the celebration. We also made cupcakes, but as delicious as they were, we figured sharing our Betty Crocker boxed cupcakes were not exactly blog worthy.
Originally we wanted to do a paper mache piñata, but we definitely were not organized to get that done in time. We then decided on using cereal boxes, and followed this awesome tutorial from Bret and Nancye.
Below are some photos of our night making the piñata... it was almost as much fun to make as it was to watch Viv smash it!
We kind of 'made up the shape' of the piñata as we went along, and secured two boxes together with tape. We stocked up on chocolate, candy, some little liquor bottles (of course), and a few little fun toys from the dollar store to fill the piñata.
Look closely and you'll find "My Little Pony"!
To finish it off we used wire to make a handle and added a big 3-0 in pipe cleaner to one side.
Here you can see the piñata in its natural habitat.....
Our apologizes for the crummy quality of the 'iPhone action shots' but.. you get the idea! (We maaaaay have embellished the explosion photo just to capture how fun it was!)
Anndddd just in case you want to watch Viv annihilate the piñata, check out the video below!
Happy 30th Birthday Viv!

Super cute piñata! It looks like a really fun birthday party. =)
ReplyDeleteI love it! Such a great idea, I never thought of making a pinata before - and I bet it smashes easier than the ones in the shops - my kids can NEVER get into them!!!

Man, I wish I had a pinata for my 30th! I love how you re-purposed an old cereal box. :)
ReplyDeleteThat is a stupendous idea! I'm totally using it for my son's birthday celebration, because he's turning 3 and loves to hit things. And I'd rather he hit that, than...me. Although we probably won't put the liquor bottles in his... :-)
