meet.make.thread art.

It was a holiday long weekend, and in our world, that means.... craft time! We didn't know what we wanted to make, so a trip to HomeSense was in order to find a little inspiration. After wandering the aisles, we came across some random cheesy bathroom framed art, and figured it had potential to turn into something cool.

Supplies We used:
  • Cheesy framed art
  • Off white acrylic paint
  • Paint brush
  • Size 0 crochet thread
  • Appliqué pins
  • Hammer
  • Mod Podge
We started by taking apart the pre-made wall art, and painting over the previous design.

While the paint was drying, we decided what design we wanted for our string art. Since we don't have a fancy Cricket or Silhouette machine (if you have one you want to donate we would be alright with that!) we drew out our designs by hand.

Hayley chose "Love Me Do"... she is such a music lover so there was no doubt that she would pick a song title or lyrics. Stephanie wanted something to hang next to her bar set-up... so "Prost" (Cheers in German) and a Stein were drawn.

Once the paint was dry, we hammered in the applique pins. We did this two different ways:
  • Hayley cut out her letters from the paper and pinned around the shapes.
  • Stephanie pinned through the paper, then ripped it out after. (If you do it this way, make sure you remember to rip up the paper BEFORE you start wrapping your thread! Makes things difficult later on)

Then it is the fun part.... wrapping the thread around the pins! A small yarn or string would work as well, just make sure your pins or nails are an appropriate size to hold whatever you choose.

During the formation, Hayley had a stroke of genius, and had the idea to mod podge the thread knots so they don't unravel. Any glue that dries clear would also work!

This project took wayyyyy longer then expected. Precisely three days that is!! Life does seem to get in the way. As much as we may wish we could craft 24/7... obviously it doesn't always work that way!

After a few hours of silent concentration nailing those tiny appliqué pins, we were so excited with the finished product! They are definitely something worth hanging on any wall!
