meet.make.lace jewelry.

A project we've been saving for a while now and finally made the time (aka we got up the guts) to try it!

Recovering from our last jewelry craft fail, we were determined to come out on top this time! There were all sorts of intricate ideas out there to add pizzazz to these pieces; like dying the lace or using doilies, but we decided to take the fool proof route and purchase coloured material.

To all the lace DIY pins we've come across in our searches, thank you for giving us the inspiration and confidence to create our own pieces.

We used:

  • 3 lace shirts from our local bar star store @ $8 each (white, blue, pink)
  • Flat nose plier
  • Fabric Stiffener (Stiffy..hehe)
  • Embellishments including beads and a fabric flower
  • Chain of different length and make
  • All the fixings to make a necklace and earrings
What we did:
  • Find a part of the lace pattern you like the best. Eg. a flower, and cut it out. Trim the edges for a clean edge with a thick border
  • Brush a coat of fabric stiffener on the lace, then blow dry
  • Repeat this step a few times
  • Add on any chain and/or jewelry fixtures to your hearts desire!

We'll admit, we got off to a bit of a rough start. We didnt know if the stiffener would actually work (it looked like a globby mess). But in the end, we think we pulled it off with some pretty wearable accessories!

Tips for your DIY lace jewelry:
  • Use lace with thick outer lines
  • A blow dryer helps to make fabric stiffen faster  - we recommend a few coats. Yes it is messy, but it turns out great!
  • If you are blow drying in the bathroom, make sure the toilet seat is closed. You can imagine what happened.
